ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Trick-or-treating in Ann Arbor this year is Saturday, Oct. 31, from 5 to 8 p.m., the hours the city suggests, MLive reported. Most other communities in Washtenaw County also go door to door on Halloween night itself, with slightly different start and end times.

The hours are suggestions, not ordinances, so some houses will hand out candy earlier or later. A porch light left on is still the usual signal.

The forecast. The National Weather Service expects a mostly cloudy Saturday in Ann Arbor with a high near 63, and a mostly cloudy Saturday night with a low around 46. It put the chance of rain at 6% during the day and 7% Saturday night in its Wednesday forecast. A jacket over the costume should be enough.

Here are the suggested hours for Saturday, Oct. 31, as reported Wednesday:

  • Ann Arbor: 5 to 8 p.m.
  • Chelsea: 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
  • Dexter: 5 to 7:30 p.m.
  • Milan: 6 to 8 p.m.
  • Northfield Township: 5 to 8 p.m.
  • Pittsfield Charter Township: 6 to 8 p.m.
  • Saline: 6 to 8 p.m.

Not posted yet. Manchester, Ypsilanti and Ypsilanti Charter Township had not posted their Oct. 31 hours as of Wednesday morning, according to MLive. In past years Manchester has typically gone from 5 to 7 p.m. and Ypsilanti Township from 5 to 8 p.m., Ann Arbor Family reported, but families there should watch for an official notice. The City of Ypsilanti is holding a Depot Town trick-or-treat on Thursday, Oct. 29, from 4 to 6 p.m.

When it gets dark. The sun sets in Ann Arbor at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, and civil twilight ends at 6:59 p.m., according to the U.S. Naval Observatory. That means most of Ann Arbor’s 5-to-8 window, and nearly all of the 6-to-8 windows in Saline, Milan and Pittsfield Township, will be in the dark. Reflective tape, a flashlight and light-colored costumes help drivers see kids crossing the street.

Clocks change that night. Daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 1. Set clocks back an hour before bed Saturday. Halloween is the last evening with a 6:30 p.m. sunset; on Sunday, the sun sets at about 5:30 p.m.
