BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — Harper Creek stepped out of the Interstate 8 Conference on Friday, Oct. 9, for a game at Kenowa Hills, a 5-1 team that had won five in a row by an average of more than 35 points.

The Beavers are 5-1 themselves and 3-1 in the league, second in the standings, according to MaxPreps. Their only loss was a 28-26 decision at Marshall on Sept. 18. Marshall, also 5-1, stayed in first after beating Jackson Northwest 51-21 last week, the Battle Creek Enquirer reported.

Harper Creek has leaned on its defense. It opened with a 38-0 win at crosstown rival Lakeview, then shut out Cedar Springs 19-0 and won 20-9 at Western. Through six games the Beavers have allowed 70 points, or under 12 a game, while scoring 191. They beat Coldwater 38-19 last Friday.

Kenowa Hills, from the Grand Rapids area, lost its opener 59-21 at DeWitt and has not lost since. The Knights beat Big Rapids 45-7, Greenville 48-6, Sparta 42-7 and Allendale 50-0 before winning 44-19 at Cedar Springs last week. They are 4-0 and first in their league and have scored 250 points.

Cedar Springs gives the closest thing to a measuring stick. Harper Creek shut Cedar Springs out at home in September; Kenowa Hills beat them by 25 on the road. MaxPreps’ computer rankings put Kenowa Hills 48th in the state and Harper Creek 96th.

The game did not count in the league standings. Harper Creek returns to conference play Oct. 16 at Jackson Northwest and closes the regular season at home against Hastings on Oct. 23.

Updated Oct. 12, 2026: Kenowa Hills won 63-7, MaxPreps results show, for its sixth straight win. Harper Creek is 5-2 and returns to Interstate 8 play Oct. 16 at Jackson Northwest; Kenowa Hills is 6-1. Records above are as of the week of the game.
