Henry Ford Museum opens a LEGO space exhibit where kids build moon rovers and Mars habitats, through Jan. 3
DEARBORN, Mich. — A new hands-on exhibit at Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation turns visitors into junior space engineers with LEGO bricks.
Artemis Adventure with LEGO Bricks opened Sunday, Oct. 18, and runs through Sunday, Jan. 3. It is inspired by NASA's Artemis program, which aims to send astronauts back to the moon, and is produced by the touring company Flying Fish with support from Science World British Columbia.
The centerpieces are large LEGO models: the Apollo 11 lunar module Eagle, the Orion spacecraft, the Lunar Gateway, the International Space Station and NASA's Space Launch System rocket. There is also an Axiom spacesuit visitors can pose in for photos.
The build stations are the draw for kids. In Rover Race, visitors design a lunar rover and test it against a friend's on a track. In Mars Habitation, they build shelters astronauts might live in on Mars.
"LEGO bricks are something many of us explored as kids and often serve as an early introduction to engineering," said Jennie King, The Henry Ford's manager of educator programs and a NASA Solar System Ambassador, in the museum's announcement. Jay Brown of Flying Fish said the goal was to let visitors "think like NASA engineers, problem-solve like scientists, and dream like explorers."
The museum, at 20900 Oakwood Blvd., is open 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Tickets are on The Henry Ford's website; members get in free. The exhibit makes a good indoor stop on a cold weekend or during winter break.
