DETROIT — Fifty-one years after the Edmund Fitzgerald went down in Lake Superior, the Dossin Great Lakes Museum on Belle Isle will spend four days remembering its 29 crewmen and everyone else lost on the Great Lakes.

The Detroit Historical Society, which runs the museum at 100 Strand Drive, has scheduled events from Saturday, Nov. 7, through Tuesday, Nov. 10, the anniversary of the 1975 sinking.

The centerpiece, the annual Lost Mariners Remembrance Ceremony, moves to the afternoon this year, and admission is free.

The schedule

Saturday, Nov. 7, 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The Livonia Amateur Radio Club will run a special event station, W8F, sharing the Fitzgerald’s story with ham radio operators around the world. Visitors can watch any time. The cost is $5, which includes museum admission; Detroit Historical Society members, educators and children 5 and under get in free, according to the museum’s announcement on Boatnerd.

Sunday, Nov. 8, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Lost Mariners Brunch serves a menu drawn from the cooking of Great Lakes freighters, including the Fitzgerald chapter of George Yaworski’s “Ships of the Great Lakes Cookbook,” with a history talk and music by Great Lakes balladeer Lee Murdock. Tickets are $85.

Sunday, Nov. 8, 3 to 4 p.m. The free Lost Mariners Remembrance Ceremony, held with the Great Lakes Maritime Institute on the Detroit River shore. A memorial wreath arrives by boat and is placed near the Fitzgerald anchor that stands outside the museum. Bells ring for the Fitzgerald’s crew and all those lost on the lakes, followed by an Honor Flotilla of Canadian and U.S. government and commercial vessels. Afterward, warm drinks and songs of remembrance by Murdock are offered inside.

Tuesday, Nov. 10, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Lost Mariners Day: free admission all day, with no scheduled programs, so visitors can tour the galleries and reflect.

Tuesday, Nov. 10, 6:30 to 9 p.m. A screening of “We Finished Their Journey,” a documentary about the 2025 Edmund Fitzgerald Memorial Swim. Seventeen relay teams of four swimmers retraced the ship’s intended route, passing iron ore pellets from the same Superior, Wisconsin, dock where the Fitzgerald took on its last load, and finished in Detroit. Organizer Jim Dreyer, who has swum across all five Great Lakes, and ground operations director David Volk will take questions. Tickets are $25, or $20 for society members.

Why it still matters

The Fitzgerald, a bulk freighter, sank on Nov. 10, 1975, during a violent November storm on Lake Superior, with no survivors. Gordon Lightfoot’s 1976 song “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” carried the story far beyond the Great Lakes.

The museum’s anchor display gives Detroiters a piece of the ship close to home. Families planning to attend the Sunday ceremony should dress for the weather, since it is held outdoors on the riverbank in November.
