Detroit’s Rouge Park throws its first Fall Festival Sunday, with the park’s new 15-year master plan on display
DETROIT — Rouge Park, the 1,184-acre park on Detroit’s west side, holds its first Fall Festival on Sunday, Oct. 18, and organizers plan to use the afternoon to show residents the city’s new 15-year master plan for the park.
The free festival runs from noon to 4 p.m. at the Sorensen Recreation Area, at the corner of Spinoza Drive and Sawyer Avenue near the cannon, according to the event listing posted by the Friends of Rouge Park, the volunteer group hosting it. Parking is along Spinoza Drive.
The group lists free food and warm drinks, pumpkin painting, face painting, archery, bonfires with s’mores, DJs, resource vendors and nature activities. Guides will lead walks down to the Rouge River and the Sorensen Promenade. Those walks include 15 to 20 steep stone steps with no railing, the listing warns; the rest of the event sits on a mostly flat lawn.
A tent at the festival will show the master plan, and visitors can leave comments there, according to the listing. WDET’s weekly metro events guide also singled out the plan’s unveiling as a reason to go.
The city began the plan in 2025 to set the park’s direction for the next 10 to 15 years. City planners took public feedback at a community meeting in March, according to the Detroit Parks and Recreation website. The Friends of Rouge Park said the plan was due to wrap up in September, with the group hosting a celebration of it in October.
It is not the first plan for the park. In 2022, the friends group drew up its own master plan with help from Lawrence Technological University students, at a time when the city lacked the resources to write one, the group says on its website.
The city calls Rouge Park, established in 1925, the largest urban park in Michigan. It has four recreation areas, six miles of paved walking paths, pools and a golf course, and 4.6 miles of the Rouge River run through it. Its natural areas include more than 400 acres of forest, 60 acres of native prairie and a 5-acre marsh, with hiking and mountain biking trails.
Several projects are already underway, the city says. Crews are installing new security cameras and lighting. A 25,000-square-foot indoor community center is planned next to Brennan Pool to serve the Cody-Rouge neighborhood, which the city says has no indoor recreation space; the family foundation of Detroit Pistons owner Tom Gores has committed $20 million to build it. The city is also working with Metroparks to restore the 60-acre prairie, using controlled burns to clear invasive woody plants so native grasses and flowers can return.
The festival is free and open to all ages, and the Friends of Rouge Park is taking free sign-ups through its Eventbrite page.
