GVSU starts work on its $166 million Blue Dot Lab in downtown Grand Rapids, a tech hub set to open in 2029 with $30 million from the state
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Grand Valley State University has started building the Blue Dot Lab, a $166 million technology hub on the Grand River in downtown Grand Rapids. University leaders, students and business leaders marked the start of construction Tuesday, Oct. 27, as demolition began inside the university’s Eberhard Center.
The project includes a $101.4 million renovation of the 10-story, 160,203-square-foot Eberhard Center at 301 W. Fulton St. and a $64.6 million addition with a north entrance near the Blue Bridge, MLive reported. When it is finished in summer 2029, the building will total about 224,000 square feet and house GVSU’s new College of Computing, according to updated university estimates.
“This is an exciting milestone for a project that goes beyond a new space to the importance of connecting the people, ideas and emerging technologies that will help activate our vision for the Blue Dot Ecosystem,” GVSU President Philomena V. Mantella said in a university release.
What will be inside. GVSU says classrooms, labs and study areas will all be built around new technology. Planned spaces include a cyber range for security training, a driving simulator, a Technology Showcase open to the public, an “Immersive Cube” for virtual simulations and a prototyping studio the university calls the X>Studio. The renovated building will also hold more degree programs and a WGVU studio, WOOD-TV reported. The Eberhard Center opened in 1988 as GVSU’s first permanent home downtown.
Who is paying. GVSU’s board signed off on a $139 million bond in February for the project, MLive reported, and the state’s 2026-27 budget gave final construction approval that clears the way for $30 million in state money. State lawmakers had approved planning for the project in the 2023 budget. The university has not published a full breakdown showing how the bond, the state share and any private gifts add up to the final price.
The business case. Supporters say the hub will feed West Michigan employers that need workers who can use artificial intelligence and other digital tools. “Companies evaluating where to locate or expand increasingly look for regions where universities, industry and talent development are aligned,” said Randy Thelen, president and CEO of the economic development group The Right Place.
The doubts. The project’s size has drawn concern from some faculty members, MLive reported, and university leaders used Tuesday’s event to stress that Blue Dot is meant to be more than a building, with digital-literacy work spread across every major. “The building downtown will be a signature for our ecosystem, but it is really about programs, initiatives, connection, people,” Mantella told WOOD-TV.
What it means downtown. The Eberhard Center sits beside the Blue Bridge, the pedestrian bridge that links GVSU’s Pew Campus to the rest of downtown. The university’s release did not mention any sidewalk, bridge or parking changes during construction. People who use the Pew Campus should watch for notices from GVSU as work moves from inside the building to the new addition.
