Free Western U.P. Housing Summit Oct. 28 in Hancock will tour Housing TIF projects; register by Friday
HANCOCK, Mich. — The region’s planning agency is bringing builders, lenders, tribal governments and local officials together across the Portage Canal next week to talk about the Copper Country’s housing shortage.
The Western Upper Peninsula Planning and Development Region will hold the 2026 Western U.P. Housing Summit from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28, at the Finnish American Heritage Center, 435 Quincy St., Hancock, The Mining Gazette reported. It is free, but space is limited and advance registration is required by Friday, Oct. 23, at wuppdr.org.
“Housing is not an issue that any one community or organization can solve alone,” WUPPDR Executive Director Jerald Wuorenmaa said.
On the agenda. Sessions cover Diversified Community Investment funding, Michigan State Housing Development Authority grant programs and Invest UP’s brownfield assessment grants. A panel will explain MSHDA’s Housing Tax Increment Financing, followed by a walking tour of Housing TIF projects underway in Hancock. MSHDA representatives are expected, and local planners want to press for rule changes that better fit rural repairs, downtown renovations and small builds.
Organizers will also promote westernuphousing.org, a free regional rental listing site. WUPPDR has been training landlords to post vacancies there instead of on social media.
Funding for the summit comes from the L’Anse Area Community Development Corporation and the New Power Tour organization.
