Marquette Wallpaper & Paint, a downtown fixture since 1946, starts its closing sale as the Hamari brothers step back
MARQUETTE, Mich. — One of downtown Marquette’s oldest storefronts is winding down. Marquette Wallpaper & Paint, at 115 S. Third St. across from the Marquette Commons, announced Oct. 14 that it plans to close within a month or two after 80 years in business.
Darryl Hamari is retiring after 51 years at the store, and his brother Mark Hamari plans to keep working elsewhere for a few more years, according to the store’s announcement as reported by Upper Peninsula News and The Mining Journal. “Thank you to ALL our customers for your loyalty,” the store wrote.
A closing sale began Monday, Oct. 19. The owners are also taking offers from anyone who wants to buy the business, which could keep it open. No closing date has been set; the store said it will post updates on its Facebook page.
The business opened in 1946. Over the decades it built its trade on paint and stain lines, custom window treatments, framing and key cutting, the kind of counter service that is getting harder to find outside big-box stores.
If you need something. Customers with special orders, framing or window-treatment jobs in progress should check with the store soon, before the final date is announced.
