Petoskey’s Community Recovery Alliance opens a permanent home on Mitchell Road, six months after mold and roof leaks closed its Bay Street center

PETOSKEY — After six months without a building of its own, the Community Recovery Alliance has reopened in what it calls its “forever home,” restoring a free, walk-in place for people working to stay sober in northern Michigan.

The nonprofit’s new center is at 2240 E. Mitchell Road, Unit B, near the Marathon gas station. It finished the first phase of construction last week and held a grand opening Oct. 23, according to the alliance and WPBN.

The alliance had been forced out of its previous home on Bay Street in late April, when Emmet County inspectors found the building unsafe. Staff told WPBN at the time that winter snow had leaked through the roof, causing water, structural and mold damage. While it searched for a new space, the group held recovery meetings on Zoom and an in-person Thursday meeting at the Charlevoix Public Library.

Not a treatment center. Executive Director Caitlin Koucky told WPBN the search was hard in part because the building owners it approached were not local, and in part because of stigma. “They assume that we are treatment, which we are not,” she said. The center offers recovery community support, she said, mostly for people recovering on their own or those leaving treatment or incarceration who need help returning to their community and maintaining long-term recovery.

What is offered. Services are free. The center has recovery coaches for people affected by addiction, recovery meetings and a space where people can simply stop in and get a cup of coffee. Its website lists noon recovery meetings on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays, and the group can be reached at 231-881-9116.

Who paid for it. Donations and grant money paid for the space, the alliance said. WPBN reported that money from the state’s Opioid Healing and Recovery Fund helped complete the first phase of renovations. The alliance says later phases are planned but has not posted a timeline.

The group’s stated mission is to serve anyone seeking recovery from substance use, with or without mental health concerns, by building “recovery friendly” communities across northern Lower Michigan.
