PORT HURON — A week late, the Port Huron Prowlers finally played at home, and they made it count.

The Prowlers beat the Watertown Wolves 6-1 on Friday night at McMorran Place in their Federal Prospects Hockey League home opener, outshooting Watertown 51-20, according to the team. The Watertown Daily Times put the crowd at 1,776. Port Huron is now 2-1-1.

The opener had been scheduled for Oct. 23 but was postponed by a presidential appearance, the team said. That was the weekend of the Trump rally at McMorran Place, so the Prowlers played only once that week, a 5-2 win over the Motor City Rockers in Wyandotte.

How it went

Arsenii Smekhnov scored the first goal of his pro career less than four minutes in. Reggie Millette tipped in a Bobby Price pass later in the first period for a 2-0 lead. Brett Lockhart made it 3-0 in the second before Donovan Powell scored Watertown’s only goal. Jamie Bucell and Price then scored 1:08 apart, and Aidan LaValley tipped in his first pro goal to finish it.

Millette and Price each had a goal and two assists. Andrew MacLean made 19 saves for the win. Watertown goalie Anthony Shrum stopped 45 shots.

Price’s goal was his first of the season. In the team’s preview, the Prowlers noted he had scored 11 goals in eight games against Watertown last season, including an overtime winner and a four-goal night.

What to watch Saturday

The teams meet again on Halloween night, Saturday, Oct. 31, at 7:05 p.m. at McMorran Place. It is their first season as Great Lakes Division opponents in what the Prowlers call the FPHL’s oldest rivalry. The team has promised giveaways and trick-or-treating on the concourse, and advance tickets at phprowlers.com save $1.

Two milestones are in play. Before the weekend, Alex Johnson was three goals from 100 as a Prowler and Austin Fetterly was four away, the team said; neither scored Friday. On the Watertown side, former Port Huron captain Dustin Henning can pass Joe Pace Jr. for the most games played in FPHL history if he dresses for both games this weekend, according to the preview.

The Wolves came to town as the only team in the league without a win, at 0-4-1, and with the FPHL’s worst penalty kill at 51.2%. Port Huron’s power play has had its own trouble, at 9.1% entering the weekend. The Prowlers opened their season at three-time champion Binghamton.
