SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. — The Soo Eagles swept a home-and-home weekend from the Elliot Lake Vikings, and they did it two different ways: a 4-3 grinder in Elliot Lake, Ontario, on Friday, then a 9-1 rout Saturday night at Pullar Stadium.

Anthony Mayes and Colton Huckson each scored three times on Saturday, the first hat tricks of their Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League careers, EUP News reported. The two wins lift Sault Ste. Marie to 10-5-1-1. Elliot Lake fell to 3-9-1-1.

The sweep came after two road losses the weekend before, 6-4 at Kirkland Lake and 5-4 in a shootout at Powassan, according to Elite Prospects’ game log. It also made it three wins this month over the Vikings, after a 6-3 Soo win on Oct. 17 in which Harmon Esch scored twice early in the third period.

Saturday: three goals in the first 7½ minutes

Mayes, who stretched his point streak to eight games, opened the scoring at 2:15, coming down the right wing on a two-on-one and wiring a short-side shot past Vikings starter William Ross. Huckson buried a feed from Jacob Kelley, and Darren Mayhew made it 3-0 with a short-handed goal at 7:22, muscling around a defender and lifting a backhand.

Elliot Lake’s Toby Johnson got one back on Soo goalie Dalton Hoornstra later in the first period. The Eagles answered on a power play early in the second, when Huckson scored from up top after quick passes with Alex Povorozniouk and Esch. Mayes then scored off a goal-mouth scramble and later completed his hat trick on another power play. In the third, Kelley scored twice, and Huckson finished his own hat trick in between.

Friday: Rothmeyer’s late winner

Friday’s game at Elliot Lake’s Rogers Arena was scoreless after one period. Alexsander Duguay put the Vikings ahead 42 seconds into the second, Kelley tied it on the rebound of a Mayhew shot, and Esch gave the Eagles a 2-1 lead on a power play at 15:30, set up by Colton Huckson.

Armando Rojo-Bolton tied it 1:29 into the third, and Carter Huckson answered 23 seconds later from a sharp angle. With 2:09 left, Jayden Rothmeyer side-stepped two defenders and scored on a backhand. That goal held up as the winner after a Johnson shot deflected in off an Eagle in the final minute. Daryn Szabo was in goal for the Soo.

Next up at Pullar Stadium

The Eagles play three home games in the next two weekends: the Powassan Voodoos on Friday, Nov. 6, at 7:30 p.m., the Timmins Rock on Friday, Nov. 13, at 7:30 p.m. and the Iroquois Falls Storm on Saturday, Nov. 14, at 7 p.m., according to the schedule posted by the Sault Ste. Marie Convention & Visitors Bureau. Pullar Stadium is at 435 E. Portage Ave.

The NOJHL is a 12-team Junior A league, and each club plays a 52-game schedule this season, according to the league announcement the Eagles posted in July.
