The fastest way to read a Michigan town is the Saturday market, if the town has one. Not the booth with the best photograph. The line. Who is selling to neighbors, who is selling to people with weekend bags, and whether the bandstand behind the tents is used for anything after the produce is packed.
October 4 is a Sunday, so this is not a report from a market morning. The Saturday pattern is the subject. In early October a market is also a season ending or a season still going, depending on the town. Squash and apples are the ordinary goods. A traveler can spend an hour and leave with lunch. That hour is real. It is not the whole square.
A reporter should stay long enough to learn who organizes the lot, who pays for the tents, and what happens to the ground on Monday. This piece does not pretend to have those answers for a specific town today. It says they are the questions. A market that exists only for people passing through is a sale. A market neighbors rely on is closer to a public square, especially in a town that does not have another one.
Eastern Market in Detroit, whose Saturday Market runs year-round, is the large, famous version, and it has its own story on this site. The same reading works on a township lot with a dozen tables. Size is not the test. Monday is the test. If the lot is empty and unexplained for the rest of the week, you still do not know who the square belongs to.
Food, a public piece of ground, and the people who keep both of them open. That is the community beat in one block. Go on a Saturday when you can, and then ask what the place is on Monday.
