State Street on a weekday
State Street is the west edge of the University of Michigan’s central campus. On a weekday the useful hour is the one when classes are in session, not the one when they let out.
The sidewalk then belongs to people with an errand: a book, a sandwich between lectures, a walk to the next building. The Diag is a block away and mostly empty of the evening crowd. Storefronts face the street the way they do in any college town, but the test is narrower. Which doors are open for someone who has forty minutes, and which are waiting for night.
This Sunday edition is not a claim about a particular class change. October 4 is a Sunday, and the campus clock is different. The piece is the weekday street itself. State Street does not need a game or a move-in weekend to be a public place. It needs the ordinary hour when students are inside.
Walk it from the corner nearest the Diag down toward the lower blocks, then turn back. The street is short. What it shows is whether the block still works when it is not performing.
