Bay City commissioners let the bridge company’s traffic-signal offer die without a vote

BAY CITY, Mich. — An offer from Bay City’s private bridge partner to pay for new traffic-signal technology went nowhere Monday, when no city commissioner made a motion to take it up, MLive reported.

The Traffic Signal Optimization and Infrastructure Funding Agreement was on the agenda for the Oct. 5 commission meeting. Without a motion, it never reached a vote. That leaves the deal unapproved, though the item could come back to the commission later.

Under the proposal, United Bridge Partners would have paid for equipment that detects and manages traffic, installed on city-owned infrastructure, with the goal of moving cars more smoothly along the Wilder Road corridor. The city’s only cost would have been maintenance, which MLive reported is already covered in the budget.

Key details were missing, according to the report: which intersections would get the equipment, how much work it would take and what it would cost.

The offer arrived in the middle of a strained relationship. The city entered a 75-year lease with Bay City Bridge Partners, a United Bridge Partners subsidiary, in late 2019 and early 2020. City officials have said the company went back on parts of that agreement, and its representatives have not attended city meetings in more than a year, MLive reported.

First Ward Commissioner Laura Kubit asked for a broader update on the partnership. She said the open issues with the company need to be resolved before any new agreement moves forward.

The commission meets next at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 19, in the second-floor commission chambers at City Hall, 301 Washington Ave.
