DETROIT — A child and three women were killed and at least eight other people were hurt in three crashes on Detroit-area freeways over about two hours late Halloween night and early Sunday, Nov. 1, according to Michigan State Police. Troopers suspect alcohol in two of the crashes.

The first crash happened about 11:45 p.m. Saturday on the westbound Davison Freeway near I-75. Troopers said a silver Chevrolet Impala carrying six people rear-ended another westbound vehicle, which lost control and hit a third car, WXYZ reported.

A child in the Impala was thrown from the car. Highland Park police took the child to a hospital, where the child died. The other five people in the Impala were taken to hospitals with injuries ranging from minor to critical, police said. The Impala’s driver was arrested for operating while intoxicated causing death. Police have not released the child’s age or name.

Under Michigan law, operating while intoxicated causing death is a felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison. No charges had been announced as of Sunday evening.

About 1 a.m., a white Chevrolet Tahoe that troopers believe was going at a high rate of speed on southbound I-75 near Schaefer Highway hit a concrete barrier and rolled several times, according to WXYZ. Two of the three women inside, including the driver, were thrown from the SUV, and the third had to be pulled out. All three were hospitalized.

About 2 a.m., a car heading south on the Lodge Freeway, M-10, near Wyoming Avenue failed to make a curve, state police said. It left the freeway, went up an embankment and through shrubbery, became airborne and landed on the entrance ramp to southbound M-10 from Wyoming, where it struck a concrete barrier, WDIV and WWJ reported.

The driver and her two passengers, all women from Detroit, died. Troopers said alcohol and speed are suspected as contributing factors. Their names and ages have not been released, and the crash remains under investigation.

The Davison and I-75 were closed for hours overnight and had reopened by Sunday, WXYZ reported.
