Juan Atkins, Detroit techno pioneer behind Cybotron and Model 500, dies at 64 before a show in Mexico City
DETROIT — Juan Atkins, the Detroit producer widely credited as the originator of techno, has died at 64, his agency said Sunday. He was found unresponsive in his hotel room in Mexico City on Saturday, Oct. 31, before a scheduled performance at the YuYu Cine Club, and was pronounced dead after being taken to a hospital, according to reports in Billboard and The Guardian.
Greensmith Artists, which represented him, confirmed the death. Dragan Greensmith asked for privacy for Atkins’ family, Billboard reported. No cause of death had been reported as of Sunday evening.
Fellow pioneer Kevin Saunderson posted a tribute to his longtime friend, and Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield issued a statement mourning Atkins as one of the city’s cultural figures, Pitchfork reported.
From Belleville to the world
Atkins grew up in Detroit and Belleville, where he met Derrick May and Saunderson. The three became known as the Belleville Three, and the music they made in the early and mid-1980s, drawing on funk, European synthesizer pop and the sound of a struggling industrial city, is regarded as the foundation of Detroit techno.
With Rick Davis, Atkins formed Cybotron, whose 1983 single “Clear” sold about 50,000 copies, according to The Guardian. The track found a new audience two decades later when Missy Elliott built “Lose Control” around it; that song reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2005, Billboard noted.
In 1985 he founded the Metroplex label and began releasing records as Model 500, including “No UFO’s.” Those records traveled to Chicago, New York and Europe, and the sound found some of its biggest early audiences in Britain and Germany.
Still working in his 60s
Atkins never stopped recording or touring. He made two albums as Borderland with the Berlin producer Moritz von Oswald, in 2013 and 2016, and revived Cybotron in 2023 with the album Maintain the Golden Ratio, The Guardian reported. The Mexico City date was part of an active touring schedule.
What it means for Detroit
Techno is one of Detroit’s best-known exports after cars and Motown, and it is the reason tens of thousands of fans come to Hart Plaza each Memorial Day weekend for the Movement festival, the successor to the Detroit Electronic Music Festival that began in 2000. Atkins’ death removes one of the three founders who could still tell that story firsthand.
