Detroit City FC hosts Hartford in the USL Championship playoffs tonight at Keyworth: kickoff, TV and what’s at stake
HAMTRAMCK — Detroit City FC opens the USL Championship playoffs at home Friday night, Oct. 30, hosting Hartford Athletic at Keyworth Stadium with kickoff at 8 p.m.
The Eastern Conference quarterfinal will air on CBS Sports Golazo Network, according to the USL. Tickets are on sale through the club.
The format leaves no room for a bad night. The playoffs are single elimination with a fixed bracket that does not reseed, and the higher seed hosts each round, the club said.
Detroit City, the No. 3 seed in the East, finished 14-7-9 with 51 points and lost only once at Keyworth all season. Its home record was 10-1-4, and it gave up just five goals in home regular-season games, tying the league record for the fewest, the USL said.
Darren Smith scored 14 goals, the most for the club in a season since it joined the Championship in 2022 and fifth-most in the league. Goalkeeper Carlos Herrera won the league’s Golden Glove with 14 clean sheets, according to Hartford’s preview.
Hartford, the No. 6 seed, went 10-7-13 with 43 points and is in the playoffs for the second straight year. The Connecticut club has never won a USL Championship playoff game. It allowed only 33 goals in 30 games and comes in off a 2-1 win over Rhode Island FC.
The teams have split their 10 league meetings, three wins apiece with four draws, and Hartford is unbeaten in the last five regular-season matchups, the USL said. Hartford won 2-1 on May 9, and the teams drew 1-1 at Keyworth on Sept. 5 after both scored in stoppage time.
This is Detroit City’s fifth straight trip to the playoffs, every season since it moved up to the league. The club won its first playoff game in 2023, 1-0 at Pittsburgh, and in 2025 knocked off top-seeded Louisville City 1-0 on the road before losing to eventual champion Pittsburgh on penalties, according to the club.
A win sends Detroit City to the conference semifinals Nov. 6-8. The conference finals are Nov. 13-15, and the USL Championship final is set for Nov. 20-22.
