Marvin’s Marvelous Mechanical Museum is back in West Bloomfield: soft-opening hours, new tap cards and where the quarter games went
WEST BLOOMFIELD — Marvin’s Marvelous Mechanical Museum, the cluttered, blinking arcade-and-oddity collection that was a Farmington Hills fixture for decades, is open again a mile up the road.
The museum is in a soft opening at 6427 Orchard Lake Road, at Orchard Lake and Maple next to a Planet Fitness, WXYZ and Hour Detroit reported. It began letting visitors in the weekend of Oct. 24–25, after a move that was supposed to finish in May but was held up by plumbing problems, according to WXYZ.
Hour Detroit reports the museum is open Wednesday through Sunday during the soft opening, with hours that vary by day, while WXYZ reported 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. hours after the opening weekend. The museum posts updates on its Facebook page, so check there before you drive, especially on a holiday weekend. A grand opening is tentatively planned for mid-November.
The new space is almost twice the size of the old one and adds two rooms for private parties, Hour Detroit reported. The biggest change for regulars is how you pay. About 95% of the machines were converted from coin slots to a card system: load credits onto a card and tap to play a game or set off one of the animatronic figures, including longtime favorites The Brain and Dr. Ralph.
Some older machines could not be converted and still take quarters. Most of those sit in a section to the right of the entrance.
The original Marvin’s spent 34 years in the Hunter’s Square shopping center in Farmington Hills. It closed in January 2025 after that city’s council voted in 2024 to tear down and redevelop the center, with a new Meijer planned, WXYZ reported. Owner Jeremy Yagoda, son of founder Marvin Yagoda, promised fans at the time that the collection would find a new home.
Longtime manager Andrew Rosenfeld told Hour Detroit there was “no playbook” for the move, since everything had to be packed into storage and then set up again. He said the old building’s dim, dusty feel was part of the magic, but that the decorations and the familiar chirps of the games came along.
The reopening drew a crowd quickly. Rosenfeld credited the Oct. 22 reunion show in Ann Arbor by Tally Hall, the band named for the shopping center’s original name, whose first album is titled after the museum. WXYZ reported that Marvin’s is also hiring.
