Drug Take Back Day Oct. 24: Michigan State Police posts take old pills, and the Flint Post also takes liquids, needles and patches
FLINT TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Every Michigan State Police post in the state will open its doors Saturday, Oct. 24, so residents can get rid of expired and unused prescription pills, no questions asked, as part of the federal Drug Enforcement Administration’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.
All 31 MSP posts will accept medications from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the State Police said in a Tuesday release. Everything collected will be destroyed. The posts will take pills only; liquids, inhalers, patches and syringes will not be accepted. Residents can find the nearest post at Michigan.gov/MSPPosts.
“Clearing out medications that are no longer needed and using a safe disposal site can help prevent prescription drug misuse, protect the environment and keep potentially dangerous medications out of the wrong hands,” said Col. James F. Grady II, the MSP’s director.
The Flint exception. At the MSP Flint Post, G-4481 Corunna Road in Flint Township, the Genesee County Prevention Coalition is co-hosting a fuller collection. For that day only, the post will take liquid medication, needles and other sharps, patches and inhalers along with pills, the coalition says, and it is the only Genesee County site taking liquids, patches and sharps, MLive reported. Health and recovery groups will be on hand, with free naloxone, the opioid overdose reversal drug, and fentanyl test strips, plus training on how to respond to an overdose. Several other Genesee County sites will take pills and capsules that day, MLive reported.
What it adds up to. Genesee County law enforcement collected 1,041 pounds of medications at a similar event in October 2024, according to the coalition’s release, as reported by MLive. Questions about the Flint event can go to the coalition at 810-285-9047.
Can’t make it Saturday? Anyone can anonymously drop off prescription drugs at any MSP post on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., except holidays, the State Police said. The DEA’s Take Back Day site also lists other collection points by ZIP code.
