Flint police chief wants license plate cameras across the whole city
FLINT — Flint’s police chief told a City Council committee that he wants license plate reader cameras across the entire city, as far as his budget allows.
“My goal is to blanket the entire city, and that decision is based on my funding for it,” Chief Terance Green said at the Sept. 23 committee meeting, Flintside reported Monday.
Flint has 93 of the cameras, made by Flock Safety, according to Flintside.
Council members called Green in to explain how the cameras are used. Some residents have pushed back, saying they don’t understand how the cameras work and raising concerns about unnecessary surveillance, Flintside reported.
Councilwoman Candice Mushatt proposed holding a community discussion about the cameras. No date had been set, according to Flintside.
In other September business, the council unanimously approved an agreement for the Flint Fire Department to join the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System. Through the network, emergency departments around Michigan pool resources, back one another up in emergencies and work from shared standards. Once the agreement is signed, the department will have access to all of the network’s resources, Flintside reported.
Flint voters will choose a mayor and Board of Education members in November. Candidates answered residents’ questions on topics from blight and violence to federal ARPA funds at a forum Saturday at Brennan Community Center, ABC12 reported. Mayor Sheldon Neeley did not attend; his office said he was unavailable because of family obligations.
