HOLLAND TOWNSHIP — A Louisiana man accused of firing shots through the door of his camper at a contractor in Holland Township has been charged with four felonies and is being held in the Ottawa County Jail on a $25,000 bond, the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office said.

Lance Wade Wilson, 45, of DeRidder, Louisiana, was arraigned by video Friday, Oct. 30, in 58th District Court before Judge Anna White. He is charged with discharging a firearm in a building, felonious assault, possessing a firearm while under the influence of alcohol and reckless use of a firearm. Judge White set bond at $25,000 cash or surety. Charges are accusations, and Wilson is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

The sheriff’s office had not released the man’s name when the standoff at Drew’s Country Campground ended with his arrest on Wednesday evening. Its new account, published by the Ottawa News Network, fills in what deputies say happened.

A contractor had been hired to do maintenance work on the camper, where Wilson had been staying temporarily, and investigators said Wilson knew the work was being done. About 3:20 p.m. Oct. 28, the contractor knocked on the door to talk about payment. Deputies say the man inside fired about four rounds through the door without warning and with no apparent motive.

The contractor was not hit and got away to call 911. No one was hurt, but several neighboring trailers were struck by bullets, the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies, the sheriff’s Critical Response Team and crisis negotiators evacuated nearby residents at the campground, at 12850 Ransom St., blocked off traffic and tried to reach the man inside. He surrendered to the team shortly after 6 p.m. US-31 was closed between New Holland and Quincy streets during the standoff and reopened about 6:20 p.m.

The investigation is continuing. Anyone with information can call the sheriff’s office or leave an anonymous tip with Silent Observer at 877-88-SILENT (745368) or mosotips.com.
