Holland Township standoff ends with an arrest after shots fired from a camper at Drew’s Country Campground; US-31 reopened
HOLLAND TOWNSHIP — A man is in the Ottawa County Jail after deputies say he fired shots from inside a camper at a Holland Township campground Wednesday afternoon, setting off a nearly three-hour standoff that closed US-31.
Deputies were called about 3:20 p.m. Oct. 28 to reports of multiple shots fired near 12850 Ransom St., at Drew’s Country Campground, the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office said. Another person was nearby when the shots were fired but was not hit, and no one was injured.
Sheriff’s Capt. Jake Sparks told reporters at the scene that a contractor doing repair work at the campground knocked on the door of a camper and was “greeted with gunfire,” WOOD Radio reported.
Deputies set up a perimeter while crisis negotiators worked to reach the man. Members of the sheriff’s Critical Response Team took him into custody safely about 6:05 p.m., the sheriff’s office said. The Kent County Sheriff’s Office and the Holland Department of Public Safety provided equipment and support.
The man’s name has not been released. The sheriff’s office said his identity will be made public after he is formally charged and arraigned. No motive had been given, and the investigation continues.
Traffic. US-31 was closed in both directions between New Holland Street and Quincy Street during the standoff, and the highway reopened about 6:20 p.m., WGHN reported.
The Mitten Daily will update this story when charges are filed.
