HOLLAND, Mich. — Families looking for a daytime, low-stress Halloween stop this weekend can head to the Holland Aquatic Center on Sunday, Oct. 25, when the center hosts its annual free Trunk-or-Treat from 2 to 5 p.m.

The event, at 550 Maple Ave., features trick-or-treating from creatively decorated car trunks, games and activities for kids of all ages, and a prize for the best-decorated trunk, according to the center’s event listing. Admission is free, and organizers ask children to come in costume and bring something to carry their candy.

“We’ve got people from all over the community … coming together to create something really magical for these kids,” Hannah Cremin, executive assistant at the Holland Aquatic Center, told WOOD-TV’s ABC 4.

Make it a pool day. The center is pairing the trunk-or-treat with a Halloween swim session that starts at noon; its event listing says the swim runs until 5 p.m., so families should bring a swimsuit and towel. The swim is not free. WOOD-TV reported that a single-day general admission starts at $14.50, and Holland residents pay $8 a day.

Want to hand out candy? The center invites local businesses and residents to decorate a trunk or donate candy and treats. Contact the Holland Aquatic Center through its website to sign up.

What else is on the calendar. The trunk-or-treat is one of several family dates the center has posted for the rest of the year:

Friday, Oct. 23: a Fall Break Super Splash with extra pool time from noon to 3 p.m. and 5:30 to 8 p.m.

Saturday, Oct. 24: the MIAA Invite, a full day of college swimming from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. that the center lists as a Hope College meet.

Monday, Nov. 16, and Monday, Dec. 21: Resident Appreciation Days, when people who live in the Holland Public School District get free daily admission with proof of residency.

Nov. 20-21: the MHSAA Girls Swimming and Diving Division 2 Finals, which bring high school teams from across the state.

Nov. 25-29 and Dec. 19 through Jan. 3: Thanksgiving and Winter Break Mega Splashes, from noon to 4 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m.

Why it’s a good pick. Trunk-or-treats put dozens of candy stops in one well-lit, walkable lot, which is easier on toddlers, strollers and anyone who would rather not knock on doors after dark. Sunday afternoon also leaves Halloween night itself, Saturday, Oct. 31, open for neighborhood trick-or-treating.
