Copper Shores puts $900,000 into nine Copper Country nonprofits, led by $237,623 for the Hancock Community Hub’s boilers and roof
HANCOCK, Mich. — The Copper Country’s community health foundation is spending more than $900,000 to fix the buildings that local nonprofits work out of.
Copper Shores Community Health Foundation’s Nonprofit Capital Improvement Grant went to nine organizations. The largest, $237,623, goes to Right Start UP for the Hancock Community Hub, a “third space” that houses 11 other local groups. The money will repair the Hub’s boilers and roof, replacing aging steam heat with separate systems for its wings and larger rooms, according to the foundation and TV6. Copper Shores said the work also positions the building as a future disaster-resilience center for Houghton County.
The other grants. Camp Josh received $200,000 for a learning center and accessibility work; the Copper Harbor Trails Club $106,750 for a headquarters with workforce housing and public restrooms; Unitē Mental Health & Wellness $68,500 for pediatric telehealth and therapy space; Big Brothers Big Sisters $60,000 for technology; Little Brothers – Friends of the Elderly $35,000 for roof and boiler repairs; and the Copper Country Angel Mission $10,500 for second-floor storage. The Calumet Art Center and Omega House hospice were also funded.
