Coat the Copper Country hands out free winter coats, boots and snow pants Oct. 23–24 in Hancock, and needs volunteers
HANCOCK, Mich. — Before the snow sticks, the Copper Country Angel Mission and the Salvation Army in Hancock want to make sure every kid has a coat.
Their annual Coat the Copper Country program holds its main distribution this week at the Salvation Army Bread of Life Center, 408 Ravine St., Hancock: 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24. A L’Anse distribution follows from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church Hall, TV6 reported.
How it works. Families can take two of three larger items, such as boots, a jacket or snow pants, plus a hat and gloves. Register online in advance; paper forms will also be at the door.
What’s needed. Organizers say they need money and items, especially children’s gloves, adult gloves and mittens, and men’s boots, jackets and snow pants. Drop-off sites include the Bread of Life Center, Walmart, Incredible Bank, Auto-Pro Glass & Tire, Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital, 41 Lumber and many area churches.
To volunteer at a distribution, email angelmission49913@gmail.com.
The program is growing: Copper Shores Community Health Foundation recently gave the Angel Mission $10,500 to renovate its second floor for storage, citing programs like Coat the Copper Country.
