Jackson’s curbside leaf pickup starts Nov. 2 and makes two rounds; hydrant flushing ends Oct. 19
JACKSON, Mich. — The City of Jackson will pick up loose leaves from the curb in two rounds this fall, from Nov. 2 through Dec. 3, the Department of Public Works says.
The city is divided into 10 collection sections, which crews will work in pairs. In the first round, Sections 1 and 6 are scheduled for Nov. 2, Sections 2 and 7 for Nov. 4, Sections 3 and 8 for Nov. 6, Sections 4 and 9 for Nov. 10 and Sections 5 and 10 for Nov. 13. The second round returns to Sections 1 and 6 on Nov. 23, then 2 and 7 on Nov. 25, 3 and 8 on Nov. 30, 4 and 9 on Dec. 1 and 5 and 10 on Dec. 3. A map on the city’s website shows which section each street is in.
The city said the second round is meant to help crews keep up with the unpredictable timing of falling leaves.
Residents should rake leaves into the street along the curb, but no more than 48 hours before their section’s date. Piles left in the street longer get in the way of street cleaning, clog storm drains and can permanently damage pavement, according to the DPW. Cars, basketball hoops and anything else that blocks the curb should be moved while crews are in the neighborhood, because leaves crews can’t reach won’t be picked up. Large piles are sometimes scooped first by loaders, with leaf vacuums following for cleanup.
Once collection begins in a section, it is likely to continue over the next several days, and dates can shift because of leaf volume, equipment problems or weather, the city said. A recorded leaf collection line at 517-768-6088 carries updates, and questions go to the DPW at 517-788-4170. The city also sends a mailer to every address and posts updates through its mass notification system.
Separately, the DPW’s fall hydrant flushing, which began Sept. 21 across the city and in bordering parts of Summit, Blackman and Leoni townships, is scheduled to run through Monday, Oct. 19. Flushing clears iron and sediment from water mains. Residents near the work may notice discolored water or low pressure, and the city advises holding off on laundry while crews are flushing nearby.
The City Council’s next meeting is at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20, at City Hall, 161 W. Michigan Ave., according to the city’s calendar and MLive.
