A Sunday in the capital

Lansing on a Sunday is not the city of a session day. The capitol is still the landmark. The work of the place, for people who live here, is elsewhere: the blocks along Michigan Avenue, the Grand River, and the neighborhoods that do not depend on a weekday office.

Old Town and REO Town are the near-in districts with their own streets. East Lansing is a separate city across the line, tied to the school. Grand Ledge, Delta Township, and the other towns in the orbit are not Lansing, even when the errand starts there. Delta Township already has its own page. This one is the cluster.

Sunday, October 4, makes the separation easier to see. The capitol lawn is open and the building is not a workplace today. Michigan Avenue has to be a street without the weekday offices. The river trail does not care what day it is. A capital region that only reads clearly when the legislature is in town has mistaken the dome for the map.

Nothing in this sketch claims what was open on October 4. It is the shape of the Sunday city: a capitol you can walk around, a river through the middle, and towns that keep their own names once you leave the belt of the capital.
