Muskegon Museum of Art starts a Young Collectors Club, with a free info night Oct. 29
MUSKEGON, Mich. — People who have thought about buying art but never known where to start now have a club for it at the Muskegon Museum of Art. The museum is launching a Young Collectors Club and will explain how it works at a free info session from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29.
The rules for joining are short. According to the announcement the museum shared through the Muskegon Lakeshore Chamber of Commerce, members need an active museum membership and have to pledge to buy at least one piece of art a year. The price is up to them. The club is aimed at people roughly 18 to 40, but the museum says nobody will be turned away because of age.
In return, members get quarterly meetings with collectors, artists and art professionals from Michigan and beyond, plus trips to artist studios, auction houses, galleries and other museums. The museum also lists worksheets for building a collection, private tours, artist talks and early looks at two of its big shows, the Michigan Contemporary Art Exhibition and the Bennett Prize Exhibition.
The museum describes the club as a place to learn about collecting and also a place to meet people. The chamber’s post calls it a “third-space,” meaning somewhere that is neither home nor work.
The Oct. 29 session is in the museum’s Education Studio. It is free, and no membership is needed to attend, though the museum’s event page asks people to RSVP. Anyone who joins that night can save the date for the club’s first official event in November.
The museum’s visitor entrance is at 315 W. Clay Ave. in downtown Muskegon. Questions go to Megan DeWitt at the museum, 231-720-2574.
