Petoskey boys cross country runs away with its Division 2 regional and heads to the state finals, as volleyball opens districts Monday
PETOSKEY — Petoskey’s boys cross country team won the Division 2 regional at Remus Chippewa Hills on Friday, Oct. 30, by a wide margin and qualified for the state finals.
The Northmen scored 45 points. Fremont was second with 99 and Cadillac third, the Traverse City Record-Eagle reported. Gaylord placed eighth, ending its season. In cross country, the lowest team score wins.
Senior Reeve Oberman led Petoskey in fourth place in 16 minutes, 27 seconds. Teammates Jack Frentz (16:29) and Garrett Lansing (16:33) were right behind him in fifth and sixth. Senior Carson Brey finished 12th, sophomore Tyler Royle was 19th in 17:15 and Owen Young was 23rd, according to the Record-Eagle.
Petoskey went in as the favorite. A Lansing State Journal playoff preview in early October called the Northmen boys a heavy favorite in the 16-team regional field.
The state finals are Saturday, Nov. 7, at Michigan International Speedway, the Record-Eagle reported. Petoskey’s athletic calendar lists a 1:30 p.m. time for the team’s state-finals event.
Other Petoskey teams are also still playing. The volleyball team opens the district tournament with a semifinal at Gaylord on Monday, Nov. 2, at 6 p.m., according to the school’s athletic calendar. A win would put the Northmen in the district final at Gaylord on Thursday, Nov. 5, against Marquette or Alpena, with regionals at Gaylord set for Tuesday, Nov. 10.
Football’s season ended Friday with a 35-14 loss at Mt. Pleasant in a Division 3 district semifinal, leaving the Northmen 6-4. The team had beaten Clare to close the regular season the week before the playoffs began.
