Michigan Travel · Port Huron
The river in the morning
Start at the water. In Port Huron the morning river and the downtown are the same hour if you do not begin inland and try to add the river later.
The St. Clair is the channel out of Lake Huron toward the lake system downstream. Freighters use it. You may see one and you may not. This piece does not schedule a ship. What you can count on is the bank itself, the light on the water early, and downtown a few streets back. Fort Gratiot Light is the lake end of that walk. The Blue Water Bridge is the upriver landmark. Stay on the Michigan side unless Canada is an actual plan. The bridge is not a scenic loop.
Early October mornings are cold on this water even when the afternoon is mild. That is a reason to go early, not a reason to skip it. The river is clearer before the day fills in with errands. Downtown, on Military Street and Huron Avenue, is the second half of the same walk, while doors are opening rather than after you have already driven somewhere else.
One morning, one bank, then the street. If you add a beach town or a second bridge, you have left the hour that makes Port Huron make sense. The river was the point.
