ROYAL OAK — A Canadian dessert chain that grew from a festival tent into storefronts across Canada has chosen Royal Oak for its first shop in the United States.

Mr. Puffs, founded in Montreal in 2004, is at 31971 Woodward Ave., north of downtown Royal Oak. The Detroit Metro Times reported Tuesday that the shop will hold its grand opening Thursday, Nov. 5, with a ribbon cutting at 11 a.m. The Oakland Press, citing the company, reported that the shop opened its doors Oct. 29. Either way, the big welcome is this week.

The first 50 customers each day from Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 5–7, will get a free six-pack of Doughpuffs, according to the Metro Times.

The company’s signature item is its take on loukoumades, the Greek fried-dough dessert. Mr. Puffs calls its version the Doughpuff and bills it as “the Original Doughnut Hole.” The batter is vegan and yeast-risen, and each order is fried and glazed to order, the Metro Times reported. The Oakland Press said Doughpuffs are sold by the box in 12, 30 or 50.

The roughly 1,000-square-foot shop is built so customers can watch every step, from mixing and proofing the batter to frying and glazing. The menu also lists milkshakes, sundaes, hot chocolate and a dessert called the Mount Olympus. Frozen Greek yogurt is expected next spring.

Founder and CEO Pandelis “Billy” Siounis started the business selling Doughpuffs at festivals from his mother’s recipe. It later moved to a food truck and then to storefronts. The chain has appeared on the Canadian TV show “Dragons’ Den” and opened in Athens, Greece. Metro Detroit got an early taste when the company brought its orange food truck to the Woodward Dream Cruise this year.

“Royal Oak is the beginning of a new chapter for us,” Siounis told the Metro Times.

Planned hours are 3 to 10 p.m. Sunday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The company says those hours are not final yet, so check before you go.

Mr. Puffs is also running a “Free Puffs for Life” contest through its U.S. Instagram account, @mrpuffsusa, with prizes unlocked as the account reaches follower milestones. The Greater Royal Oak Chamber of Commerce lists the shop as a locally owned member.
