Things to do in Troy for Halloween: a police trunk-or-treat Oct. 22, Troy Historic Village trick-or-treat and a jack-o’-lantern trail Oct. 24
TROY, Mich. — Halloween week in Troy starts Thursday, Oct. 22, with two free trick-or-treat nights, one among police cars and fire trucks and one on a forest trail, and builds to a weekend of village trick-or-treating and a jack-o’-lantern walk before the city’s suggested trick-or-treat hours on Saturday, Oct. 31.
Most of the events require registration ahead of time, and the biggest one is already full. Here is what is on the calendar.
Emergency Vehicle Trunk-or-Treat, Thursday, Oct. 22, 5 to 8 p.m. The Troy Police Department’s annual Halloween Safety Bash lets children collect treats from decorated police cars, fire trucks, ambulances and other emergency vehicles and see the equipment up close, according to the department’s event page. It is free, but only children who trick-or-treat need tickets, and the listing shows the event as sold out. Partners include the Troy Fire Department, the Department of Public Works and the Michigan State Police. The event is at the police department, 500 W. Big Beaver Road.
Tree Trunk or Treat at Turtle Woods, Thursday, Oct. 22, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Instead of a parking lot, Six Rivers Land Conservancy leads costumed families on a nature hike through the Turtle Woods preserve, handing out treats along the trail and light refreshments, according to an event listing posted with Oakland County Parks. The hike leaves at 5:45 p.m. from Evanswood Church, 2601 E. Square Lake Road. No fee is listed, but families must preregister with the conservancy by calling 248-601-2816 or emailing hcoleman@sixriversrlc.org. Waterproof shoes are recommended because the trail can be wet.
Trick-or-Treat: Under the Sea!, Friday, Oct. 23, 5 to 8 p.m., and Saturday, Oct. 24, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Troy Historic Village, 60 W. Wattles Road, turns its grounds into an ocean-themed trick-or-treat with games, a craft and candy stops that include teal pumpkin options for children with food allergies, the village says. Registered families get early access at 4 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. Saturday. Advance tickets are $9, or $5 for Troy Historical Society members, and registration closes at noon Thursday, Oct. 22. At the door it is $10, or $7 for members, and children under 2 get in free. The event runs rain or shine, and the village says most families spend one to two hours.
Jack-O-Lanterns Among the Trees, Saturday, Oct. 24, 4 to 6 p.m. or 7 to 9 p.m. The Troy Nature Society’s jack-o’-lantern night lights the Sugar Maple loop at Stage Nature Center, 6685 Coolidge Highway, with carved pumpkins, according to event listings. Visitors can learn about nighttime animals, hear stories around the fire pit, have refreshments and see the center’s live owls. Tickets are $18 for teen and adult nonmembers, $16 for members and $8 for children 4 to 12, and children under 4 are free. Families who want their own pumpkin on the trail can carve one at the center on Friday, Oct. 23, for $15 a pumpkin. Preregistration is required.
Citywide trick-or-treat, Saturday, Oct. 31, 6 to 8 p.m. Those are the city of Troy’s suggested hours for neighborhood trick-or-treating, according to the Oakland County Moms events guide, which cites the city’s website.
Stage Nature Center’s trails stay free and open from dawn to dusk year-round, the center says, for families who want a fall walk on a day without an event.
