Mohawk Secretary of State office moves to Tuesdays only starting Nov. 10: what Keweenaw drivers need to know
MOHAWK, Mich. — Michigan’s northernmost Secretary of State office is changing the one day a week it opens, and Keweenaw County drivers who count on it will need to adjust their calendars next month.
The branch at 3616 US-41 in Mohawk will move its weekly service day from Thursday to Tuesday starting Tuesday, Nov. 10, the Michigan Department of State said in an Oct. 26 announcement. The office will be closed Thursday, Nov. 5, and will then open every Tuesday after that.
Hours do not change: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the office closed for lunch from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
The gap to plan around. Because the last Thursday slot in early November is dropped and the first Tuesday is Nov. 10, anyone who was planning a stop the week of Election Day should go to Houghton instead or wait for the new schedule. The state did not give a reason for the switch.
The backup office. The closest full-time branch is at 902 Razorback Drive in Houghton. It is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Residents can schedule a visit at mi.gov/sos or by calling 888-767-6424.
Skip the counter. Many errands no longer need an office at all. The department says most transactions can now be done online, and its self-service stations print license plate tabs and renew driver’s licenses and state IDs on the spot, with menus in nine languages. The nearest station to Mohawk is inside MarketPlace Foods, the former Tadych’s Econofoods, at 1000 W. Sharon Ave. in Houghton.
For a small, rural branch that opens only once a week, the practical advice is simple: check whether your errand can be done online or at the kiosk first, and if it can’t, book the Houghton office or circle the first Tuesday, Nov. 10.
