Dearborn police drone spots home invasion suspect hiding in bushes before dawn; parolee now charged
DEARBORN, Mich. — A Dearborn police drone with night-vision cameras found a home invasion suspect hiding in bushes early Oct. 7, leading officers straight to him, police said.
Officers were called around 4 a.m. to a break-in near McMillan and Oak streets, police said. Police say the man got into two occupied homes. A drone sent up through the department's Drone as First Responder program picked up the suspect as he moved through the neighborhood and then spotted him hiding in shrubs, according to ClickOnDetroit and FOX 2, which aired the drone video.
Officers arrested him without incident. Police said he had recently been paroled after serving time for breaking into occupied homes.
He was charged Oct. 9 with first-degree home invasion, possession of burglary tools and being a fourth-offense habitual offender, according to the reports. The Mitten Daily is not naming him because the charges are pending. A charge is an accusation, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
Dearborn is one of several metro Detroit departments now flying drones from fixed stations so they can reach a call before patrol cars arrive. Police credited the drone with the quick arrest.
