GM will ready its Lansing Delta Township plant to build hybrids, part of more than $2 billion it plans to spend in the Lansing region

DELTA TOWNSHIP, Mich. — General Motors will prepare its Lansing Delta Township Assembly plant to build hybrid vehicles, the company said Tuesday, the clearest sign yet that the automaker is steering back toward gas-electric models after years of betting heavily on fully electric ones.

The plant west of Lansing builds the Chevrolet Traverse, Buick Enclave and GMC Acadia, three related three-row SUVs that rank among GM’s steadiest sellers. GM said the factory, which marks its 20th anniversary this year, built more than 291,000 vehicles in 2025, the most in its history.

What GM confirmed. In its announcement, GM said it “intends to prepare the site for future hybrid-electric vehicle production” as part of investments in the Lansing region that will top $2 billion over the next several years. That figure includes the $1.25 billion it announced earlier for the nearby Lansing Grand River Assembly plant. GM did not name the models or give a start date, saying those details will come “closer to launch.”

What has been reported. Reuters, citing people familiar with the plans, reported that GM will build hybrid versions of the Traverse, Enclave and Acadia at Delta Township. The Detroit Free Press reported that the new commitment is about $1 billion on top of the Grand River money. GM itself has not confirmed either detail.

The federal grant. GM and the U.S. Department of Energy are restructuring a Domestic Manufacturing Conversion Grant, with the money now going to Delta Township for hybrid work, GM said. The Energy Department awarded GM $500 million in 2024 to retool a Lansing-area plant for electric vehicles, but the money was never released, Reuters and TechCrunch reported. GM would not say whether the amount will stay at $500 million, according to the Free Press. Energy Department Assistant Secretary Audrey Robertson toured the plant Tuesday, Reuters reported.

“Lansing’s strength starts with its people. Their skill and experience are why we continue to invest here,” Mike Trevorrow, GM’s senior vice president of global manufacturing, said in the announcement. “We’re building on what this team does well today while preparing for what customers will need in the years ahead.”

Why it matters here. Delta Township had once been tied to GM’s electric plans, with a battery plant nearby built through its joint venture with LG Energy Solution. GM has since sold its stake in that plant, the Free Press reported, and the company says it has booked $11.2 billion in EV-related charges since mid-2025. A hybrid lineup gives the Delta plant a product plan built around vehicles it already makes in volume, rather than a wait for EV demand to catch up.

CEO Mary Barra told analysts on GM’s Oct. 20 earnings call that hybrids are coming “in multiple segments,” adding that “there isn’t going to be additional (capital expenditure) and engineering” beyond what is already planned, the Free Press reported.

What it means for you. Nothing changes on the line right away: the plant keeps building the current gas SUVs, and GM has not said when hybrid production would start or how many jobs it would add. For shoppers, it would be the first hybrid version of these SUVs from GM in the U.S.; outside the Corvette, GM sells no hybrids here today, the Free Press noted.
