GRAND LEDGE, Mich. — Grand Ledge is one win from its first unbeaten regular season since 2015 after beating DeWitt 28-14 on Friday night to win the Capital Area Activities Conference Blue Division outright, the Lansing State Journal reported.

The Comets (8-0, 6-0 CAAC Blue) close the regular season at home against Temperance Bedford (7-1) at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, according to Bedford’s schedule.

Friday’s win was Grand Ledge’s first over DeWitt since a 56-49 shootout in 2022, and it gave coach Joe Brya’s team its first league title since that season, according to the State Journal.

It did not start well. Grand Ledge lost a fumble on the opening kickoff, and DeWitt began its first drive in Comets territory. Coleman VanFossen ended that threat with an interception. He later recovered a DeWitt fumble, and Grand Ledge scored touchdowns after both takeaways. VanFossen also made a key catch on a second-half scoring drive, the newspaper reported.

Ashton Delaney scored a first-quarter touchdown for Grand Ledge, and Caedin Martin-Seymour answered with a second-quarter score for DeWitt, according to the State Journal’s game photos.

Anthony Baker finished it. With Grand Ledge ahead 21-14 and facing third-and-11 near midfield with just under two minutes left, Baker broke free down the sideline for a 58-yard touchdown run with 1:54 to play. He ran for 71 yards and two scores.

“We’re great. We’re not good anymore, we’re (a) great (team),” VanFossen told the State Journal. “We can make a deep run in the playoffs and people will know who we are.”

DeWitt (6-2, 4-1) had won 21 straight league games. Its last CAAC loss before Friday came against East Lansing in Week 4 of the 2023 season. The Panthers finish the regular season against Okemos (5-3), the State Journal reported.

Bedford comes to Grand Ledge off its first loss. Saline beat the Kicking Mules 35-21 on Friday in Temperance after leading 28-7 through three quarters, according to the MaxPreps box score. Bedford, coached by Dave Mifsud, had opened 7-0 with wins that included Ann Arbor Pioneer, Dexter and Ann Arbor Huron, according to its posted results.
