Things to do near Delta Township this week: a Grand Woods Park hike, a cursed library and a Great Lakes ghost talk
DELTA TOWNSHIP, Mich. — The week before Halloween brings a mix of quiet fall outings and spooky ones to Delta Township and the towns around it, from a guided walk in the woods to a library branch that will be “cursed” for a day.
Eaton County Parks naturalist Ben Savoie leads a guided autumn hike Wednesday, Oct. 21, at Grand Woods Park in Delta Township. The county says the walk will cover the park’s natural features and how they change with the season. Its events page does not list a start time, so check with Eaton County Parks before heading out.
Savoie’s weekly autumn color tours, which highlight local plants and park history, continue Thursday, Oct. 22, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Fox Memorial Park. The last one is Friday, Oct. 30, at the same hour at Fitzgerald Park in Grand Ledge.
In Grand Ledge, the Grand Ledge Area District Library, 131 E. Jefferson St., fills the week with Halloween crafts. It starts Monday, Oct. 19, with a 6 p.m. session making tiny “ghost in a jar” necklaces from glass vials and cotton balls. On Wednesday from 6 to 7 p.m., teens can build their own horror creatures from air-dry clay, fake teeth and fake eyeballs. On Thursday from 6 to 7:30 p.m., the library supplies pie-size pumpkins and everything needed to carve or decorate them, while its limited supply lasts.
The library’s Wacousta Branch, 9135 W. Herbison Road, turns into a Halloween puzzle on Saturday, Oct. 24. In “Cursed Library,” teams of one to six get 30 minutes to find the right books to break a curse on the building, with library “haunts” along the way. It runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Registration is required, and anyone under 16 must come with an adult.
Families looking for candy before Halloween have two downtown options in Eaton County. Eaton Rapids holds Downtown Trick-or-Treat from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, and the first 100 children in costume to stop at City Hall get a free trick-or-treat bag, according to the county. Charlotte’s Charloween downtown trick-or-treating follows Monday, Oct. 26, from 5 to 7 p.m., and is free for all ages.
That Monday evening, author and shipwreck hunter Ross Richardson brings “Haunted Michigan Mysteries – Halloween Edition” to the Grand Ledge library from 6 to 8 p.m. The program covers reported poltergeist activity, houses said to be haunted, Great Lakes shipwrecks and other unexplained stories.
Bargain hunters can stop at Trinity Episcopal Church, 201 E. Jefferson St., where a rummage sale runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday. Parking is free in the city lot by the library.
Further out, the Grand Ledge library opens a “gently haunted” building to young children and their parents from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, ahead of Bridge Street trick-or-treating from 5 to 7 p.m. Grand Ledge’s citywide trick-or-treating is 6 to 8 p.m. on Halloween, with sirens marking the start and the end. Eaton County Parks’ Pumpkin Chuck, with a pumpkin catapult and pumpkin-rolling contests, is Saturday, Nov. 7, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
