DELTA TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Delta Township’s new Senior and Activity Center is built, toured and ribbon-cut. The classes, game nights and bingo lunches come next, starting in January 2027.

Township, school and state officials held the ribbon cutting Tuesday morning at 4344 W. Michigan Ave., the former Colt Elementary School, and guests took self-guided tours, WILX reported.

The senior center fills the north half of the building. The south half is the Colt Early Childhood Education Center, run by Waverly Community Schools, which has worked with the township on the conversion since 2023, according to the township’s project page.

Why the move: The township says the project answers long-running problems at its current Enrichment Center, including structural failures in the old classroom wing on its north side, high repair costs, tight space and poor accessibility.

Who paid: A $10 million state appropriation, sought by state Rep. Angela Witwer, D-Delta Township, and state Sen. Sarah Anthony, D-Lansing, covers the senior side. The Waverly school board awarded a $13.9 million construction contract for the whole building, and the senior center’s share was about $8.2 million, the township says. It expects the full cost, including landscaping and furniture, to stay within the state money, with no township funds needed.

“I am so proud to have brought taxpayer dollars back home for this project,” Witwer said in a statement released by House Democrats.

Township Supervisor Fonda Brewer said in the same release that seniors “will have a safe and modernized space to connect with the community.” Waverly Superintendent Glenn Mitcham told WILX the building is “a warm inviting environment.”

The release says programming begins in January. Residents with questions can call the township at 517-323-8500.
