HOLLAND, Mich. — The Holland Board of Public Works is moving ahead with engineering work to replace about 1,400 private-side galvanized water service lines that were previously connected to lead, WHTC reported.

The BPW board considered retaining Abonmarche Consultants for engineering services at a cost of a little more than $263,000 at its meeting Monday, Oct. 12, at 625 Hastings Ave., according to the station. The contract falls within a $300,000 amendment to the utility’s fiscal 2027 water distribution budget.

The money comes from a Drinking Water State Revolving Fund grant the BPW received in July, WHTC said, so the engineering work is not being paid from water rates.

Why galvanized lines. Under Michigan’s Lead and Copper Rule, galvanized service lines that are or were downstream of lead pipe, including lead goosenecks, must be replaced along with lead lines, because the galvanized pipe can collect lead and release it later. The lines in this project are on the private side of the connection, WHTC reported.

What’s next. The engineering work comes before any digging. Customers who want to know what their service line is made of can contact the BPW.
