Holland’s 1928 People’s State Bank on Eighth Street could become a 42-room boutique hotel with a speakeasy in the vault
HOLLAND, Mich. — A developer from the Upper Peninsula wants to turn downtown Holland’s 1928 People’s State Bank building into a 42-room boutique hotel, with a speakeasy reached through the bank’s original vault.
Braveworks, based in Houghton, has proposed The Vault Hotel at 36 E. 8th St., MLive and WOOD TV reported. The plan calls for renovating about 15,518 square feet in the existing building and adding about 20,000 square feet in a two-story addition, along with a 47-space parking lot north of Ninth Street.
The Holland Planning Commission is reviewing the project, and a decision is expected in November, according to MLive. The developer has said it is targeting an opening by Tulip Time 2028.
The building. The bank anchored East Eighth Street for decades. Fifth Third Bank sold it in 2022 to Holland Lakeview Holdings, MLive reported.
The developer. Braveworks is led in part by co-founder Jen Julien. WGVU reported on the plans in September.
Why it matters. Downtown Holland draws heavy crowds for Tulip Time, Dutch Winterfest and summer weekends, and the project would add rooms within walking distance of Eighth Street. The Hollander also covered the proposed addition.
What’s next. The Planning Commission’s review is the main city approval step. Any decision would be posted on the city’s meeting agendas.
