No. 14 Michigan Tech football, 3-0 in the GLIAC, takes its best shot at No. 1 Ferris State and a 37-game win streak
HOUGHTON, Mich. — Michigan Tech’s football team gets the biggest test in Division II on Saturday.
The No. 14 Huskies (6-1, 3-0 GLIAC) play at top-ranked Ferris State at 1 p.m. Oct. 24 in Big Rapids. Ferris is unbeaten and riding a 37-game winning streak after rallying from a 17-0 hole to beat Grand Valley State last week.
Tech is coming off a 56-33 win over Northern Michigan that kept the Miner’s Cup in Houghton for a 16th straight year. The Huskies went 5 for 5 in the red zone and scored eight touchdowns. Quarterback Alex Bueno and receiver Abram Larner hooked up for big plays all afternoon, and Elliott Larner ran for multiple scores. Tech also beat Grand Valley 40-34 in overtime on Oct. 10.
“We didn’t play particularly well on defense, giving up too many third downs and missing some tackles,” coach Dan Mettlach said after the NMU game, “but we’ll continue to work on that side of the ball and get it cleaned up.”
Ferris coach Tony Annese told the Big Rapids Pioneer his team knows what is coming “from that group from Houghton. … They’re so gritty. It will be another battle at home.”
The stakes. Tech, Ferris and Davenport are all 3-0 in the conference. A win would give the Huskies the inside track to a GLIAC title; Tech still hosts Davenport on Nov. 7.
