Portage Central hosts Mattawan Friday after a six-game win streak
PORTAGE, Mich. — Portage Central brings a six-game winning streak into Friday night’s home date with Mattawan, a non-league game that closes the Mustangs’ home regular-season slate before a trip to St. Joseph.
Central is 6-1 overall and 5-0 in league play, alone in first according to MaxPreps standings. The Mustangs’ only loss was a 24-14 season-opening defeat at Toledo Central Catholic. Since then they have beaten Forest Hills Central, Portage Northern, Kalamazoo Central, Loy Norrix, Battle Creek Lakeview and Battle Creek Central, outscoring those six opponents 269-73, MaxPreps results show.
Their latest win was a 61-19 road victory at Battle Creek Central on Oct. 9. Earlier this month The Mitten Daily covered Central’s league path after the Portage Northern win.
Mattawan is 2-5 overall and 2-3 in league play. The Wildcats opened with losses to Vicksburg and West Ottawa, then won a 77-76 shootout against Battle Creek Central on Sept. 11 before dropping games to St. Joseph, Lakeshore and Norrix. They bounced back last Friday with a 49-13 home win over Battle Creek Lakeview, according to MaxPreps.
Mattawan has scored 188 points and allowed 292. An earlier Mitten Daily preview of Norrix against Mattawan tracked the Wildcats’ rough middle stretch.
Kickoff is 7 p.m. Friday at Portage Central, 8135 S. Westnedge Ave., according to MaxPreps. Central finishes the regular season at St. Joseph on Oct. 23. Mattawan travels to Michigan Center the same night.
