Mackinaw City, St. Ignace, and the water between
Mackinaw City sits at the south end of the Mackinac Bridge. St. Ignace sits at the north end. The straits are the water between them, and Mackinac Island sits in that water, reached by ferry rather than by the bridge.
The towns are not one downtown with a view. Each has its own main street, its own motel row, and its own waterfront. In early October, after the peak weeks, both places are still bridge towns. The bridge does not close for the season. The island traffic does thin, which changes the docks more than it changes the span.
Sunday, October 4, is a ordinary bridge day in that sense. People still cross because I-75 crosses. The local fact is smaller: two towns that face the same channel and do not share a main street. What happens on the Mackinaw City side is not automatically what happens in St. Ignace. The island is a third place, with its own clock.
This is desk copy about the lay of the two towns. It does not report a count of cars, a fare, or a ferry that ran on this date. Fort Michilimackinac is the state park on the Mackinaw City side of the shore. It is a place on the map, not a claim about today’s gate.
