Michigan Travel · The Straits
One crossing, then the shore you are on
The Sunday is the bridge and the two shores. Start in Mackinaw City, where the bridge meets the Lower Peninsula, and walk the water before you drive. Cross once. Stop in St. Ignace long enough to see the Upper Peninsula side of the same channel. Then stay.
The Mackinac Bridge is the photograph from either approach, and it is also just the road if you refuse to get out. Walking either waterfront first makes the span a place instead of a minute on I-75. Early October is a clear time for that. The summer pressure on the docks is off. The wind on the straits is not.
Mackinac Island is a different day. The car stays on the mainland either way, and the ferry is its own clock. A separate desk piece on the island is already on the site. Do not fold it into this crossing. Fort Michilimackinac, on the Mackinaw City shore, is likewise a stop you choose, not a bonus you squeeze in after the island.
I-75 will let you treat the straits as a minute on the way to somewhere else. That misses the only reason to leave the car here. One shore, the span, the other shore. If you are going on into the Upper Peninsula, the color and the next town belong to tomorrow’s drive, not to the margin of this one.
