Unbeaten Menominee wins 38-28 at Negaunee, one week before its West-PAC Copper showdown with Kingsford
NEGAUNEE, Mich. — Menominee had barely been tested in six games. The Maroons got their next chance Friday night, Oct. 9, at Negaunee, the last stop before a home game against Kingsford that is shaping up as the Western Peninsula Athletic Conference Copper division’s title game.
Menominee was 6-0 overall and 4-0 in the division and had outscored opponents 269-55, according to standings kept by Michigan-Football.com. Its closest game was a 22-8 win over Calumet on Sept. 18. Every other result has been decided by at least 29 points, including a 60-6 opener against Marinette, Wis., and a 43-6 win at Gladstone last week.
Kingsford was also 6-0 and 4-0 in the Copper. The Flivvers faced Ishpeming Westwood that Friday, then travel to Menominee on Oct. 16, according to Menominee’s MaxPreps schedule.
Negaunee, 4-2 overall and 2-2 in the division, was the team that could have scrambled that plan. The Miners opened the season by edging Marquette 30-28 and beat Gladstone 42-6, but they lost league games to Calumet and Kingsford by a combined eight points in back-to-back September weeks.
They had won two straight since, a 40-0 shutout of Hancock and a win over Westwood last Friday.
The common opponents point to Menominee. The Maroons beat Marquette 49-19 on the road, a 30-point margin against a team Negaunee beat by two. Both beat Gladstone by 36 or 37. Calumet, which edged Negaunee 21-18, managed eight points against Menominee.
The NFHS Network listed the game for streaming. Negaunee hosts Houghton on Oct. 16 before closing the regular season at Iron Mountain on Oct. 22. Menominee finishes at Bark River-Harris on Oct. 23.
