Warren boy, 12, seriously hurt after a turning pickup strikes and drags his bike near Van Dyke and Meadow
WARREN, Mich. — A 12-year-old boy riding a bicycle was seriously injured Thursday afternoon when a pickup truck turning onto Van Dyke Avenue struck him and dragged him a short distance, Warren police said.
The boy was in stable condition at a Metro Detroit hospital Thursday night and is expected to survive, police told local news outlets. Police have not released details about his injuries.
The crash happened near Van Dyke and Meadow Avenue, just north of Eight Mile Road. A preliminary investigation found the boy was crossing Meadow when a Dodge pickup turned south onto Van Dyke and hit him, according to police accounts reported by WDIV-TV and CBS Detroit. The truck trapped him underneath before it stopped.
Warren firefighters freed the boy from beneath the truck. Nearby police agencies blocked traffic along the route so fire crews could get him to a hospital quickly, police said. A witness told WXYZ-TV that crews had to jack up the vehicle to reach him.
The driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with officers, and police said drugs and alcohol are not suspected.
Van Dyke was closed in both directions between Toepfer Road and Westminster Avenue for about two and a half hours while the department’s Traffic Crash Reconstruction Team worked the scene, WXYZ reported. The road reopened Thursday night, and the team’s investigation is continuing.
“Everyone just needs to slow down,” Harmony Ostrander, who lives on Meadow, told WXYZ.
