WARREN, Mich. — The last group of students whose training will be paid for by the U.S. Navy starts Oct. 26 in Macomb Community College’s Michigan Maritime Manufacturing program, MLive reported. Classes meet at the college’s Michigan Technical Education Center, known as M-TEC, on Tank Avenue in Warren.

The program, called M3, offers two fast-track tracks, one in maritime CNC machining and one in welding. Each runs 17 weeks. Students are in class 40 hours a week, Monday through Friday, on a day schedule from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. or an evening schedule from 3:30 p.m. to midnight, the college said in its announcement. Most of that time is spent in hands-on training.

The Navy grant covers tuition and supplies, according to Macomb. The college’s program page says there is no charge for tuition, supplies or equipment, and that the training adds up to 600 hours.

No manufacturing experience is needed to enroll, and the program is open to anyone 18 or older, including recent high school graduates, the college says. Veterans can get help through Macomb’s Office of Veteran & Military Services.

Graduates earn a Macomb certificate and are prepared to test for credentials from the American Welding Society and the National Institute for Metalworking Skills. CNC students can earn up to three credits toward a degree, but the welding track is separate from the college’s welding associate degree, according to the program page.

“There is a great demand as well as continued growth in metro Detroit and throughout the state for those with CNC machining and welding skills,” Christopher Reilly, Macomb’s director of Workforce Continuing Education, Engineering & Advanced Technology, said in the announcement. He said graduates are ready for well-paying jobs at local maritime manufacturers.

The next information session is Wednesday, Oct. 14, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at M-TEC, 7900 Tank Ave. Registration is required, and questions can go to M3@macomb.edu.
