FLINT, Mich. — A Saturday in Flint on Oct. 10 could start with molten glass and end with a concert grand, and the two bookends sit a short walk apart on East Kearsley Street.

The Flint Institute of Arts, 1120 E. Kearsley St., ran free glassblowing demonstrations in its Hot Shop from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., part of a series it holds every Saturday and Sunday. Gallery admission is free for Genesee County residents, museum members and children 12 and under. Other adults pay $10, and students with ID and seniors pay $8, according to the museum.

Downtown, Factory Two, 129 N. Grand Traverse St., turned its dock over to the Flint Vintage Flea Market from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The market was free and open without registration, though Factory Two asked visitors to RSVP online.

Just north of the city, Genesee County Parks’ Crossroads Village & Huckleberry Railroad, 6140 N. Bray Road, was open from noon to 9 p.m. for the second weekend of Halloween Ghosts & Goodies. Admission covers 20 treat stops, a straw maze, a magic show in the Colwell Opera House, and cider and doughnuts. The Huckleberry Ghost Train Express adds a 40-minute ride through the countryside aboard the historic Huckleberry train.

Village-only tickets are $17, and a train-and-village combination is $27 for anyone 13 months or older; younger babies get in free. The parks system recommends buying in advance because trains sell out, and gate sales stop at 8:30 p.m., a half-hour before closing. A Halloween dinner buffet is served Saturdays at 5, 5:30 and 6 p.m., with reservations suggested. The event continues on select dates through Oct. 30.

The night belonged to the Flint Symphony Orchestra, which performed “An American Love Story” at 7:30 p.m. at FIM Whiting Auditorium, 1241 E. Kearsley St. The program opened with Leonard Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from “West Side Story,” brought pianist Haochen Zhang to the stage for George Gershwin’s Concerto in F and ended with Howard Hanson’s Symphony No. 2, the “Romantic.”

Tickets started at $28, or $22 for Genesee County residents, with fees included, according to the Pure Michigan event listing. The box office can be reached at 810-237-7333.
