Things to do in Flint Oct. 23–25: “Dracula” at the Capitol, Halloween pops at the Whiting and Ghosts & Goodies at Crossroads Village
FLINT, Mich. — The last weekend before Halloween in Flint brings a gothic film night at the Capitol Theatre on Saturday, a costume-friendly Flint Symphony Orchestra concert on Sunday afternoon and four straight days of trick-or-treating and ghost-train rides at Crossroads Village.
The concert, the film and the village are all ticketed, and Crossroads warns that its trains sell out. Several smaller community events around Genesee County are free.
Thursday through Sunday — Ghosts & Goodies at Crossroads Village. Genesee County Parks runs Halloween Ghosts & Goodies at Crossroads Village, 6140 N. Bray Road, from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday and from noon to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, with ticket sales ending at 8:30 p.m. Admission includes 20 treat stops, a straw maze, cider and doughnuts, and a magic show in the Colwell Opera House. Village-only tickets are $17, or $27 with a 40-minute ride on the Huckleberry Ghost Train Express; babies 12 months and younger get in free. The parks department recommends buying train tickets in advance. A Halloween dinner buffet seats at 5:30, 6 and 6:30 p.m. Friday and at 5, 5:30 and 6 p.m. Saturday, with reservations suggested. The village is open again Oct. 29 and 30.
Saturday night — “Bram Stoker’s Dracula” at the Capitol. The Flint Institute of Music screens Francis Ford Coppola’s 1992 film at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Capitol Theatre downtown. The 6 p.m. Vampire Ball VIP experience that comes before it, a candlelit costume party with music, dancing and roaming performers staged by Wandering Lantern Productions, is sold out, FIM says, but film-only tickets are still offered. The movie is rated R, runs about two and a half hours and is meant for adults. Every guest needs a ticket, and there is no re-entry.
Sunday afternoon — Frightfully Fun Pops. The Flint Symphony Orchestra plays a family Halloween concert at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Whiting Auditorium, with guest conductor Abdiel Vázquez leading spooky classics and playful favorites. Audiences are invited to come in costume, and treats and activities follow the show. Tickets start at $31, or $26 for Genesee County residents, fees included, and children 12 and under get in free with an adult ticket. The concert runs about an hour and 15 minutes without intermission, and an American Sign Language interpreter will be on hand.
Around the county. Explore Flint & Genesee, the county visitors bureau, lists a zombie walk and haunted trail at Zombies, Scarecrows and Monsters in Linden on Friday and Saturday, and Valley Church Burton’s free eighth annual Harvest Festival on Saturday with trunk-or-treating, yard games and face painting. In Fenton, the Howling Haunted Trail has its last night Saturday, and a staged “War of the Worlds” with a live orchestra runs Friday through Sunday as a benefit for the Fenton Community Orchestra and Wishing Well Theatre.
For indoor, all-ages fun, the bureau lists the Ooky Spooky Light Show and Laser Halloween at Longway Planetarium through Oct. 31. For bigger scares, it points to the Spooky Trails haunted hayrides and Porter’s Orchard’s Friday and Saturday night spooky hayride and haunted corn maze in Goodrich.
