Halloween lands on a Saturday this year, and Mid-Michigan cities and townships have set their trick-or-treating hours for Oct. 31. Most chose an early-evening two-hour window, and a few start or end earlier, according to times collected by ABC12 from local communities and police.

The hours are recommendations, not curfews: the City of Midland, for one, says it suggests a time each year but does not organize Halloween activities. Communities can still change their plans, so check your city or township’s website or social media before heading out.

Saginaw County. City of Saginaw, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Saginaw Township, 5 to 7 p.m. Carrollton Township, 6 to 8 p.m. Frankenmuth, 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Bay and Midland counties. Bay City, 6 to 8 p.m. Midland, 6 to 8 p.m. within city limits, which the city confirmed in an Oct. 9 reminder reported by the Midland Daily News. Before dark, Downtown Midland’s Trick or Treat Downtown runs from 2 to 4 p.m., with participating businesses handing out candy, according to the downtown organization.

Isabella and Gratiot counties. Mt. Pleasant, 6 to 8 p.m. Alma, Ithaca and St. Louis, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Breckenridge, 6 to 8 p.m.

Elsewhere nearby. Burton, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Grand Blanc, 6 to 8 p.m. Lapeer, 6 to 8 p.m. Owosso and Laingsburg, 6 to 8 p.m. Caro, 6 to 7:30 p.m. Pigeon, 5:30 to 7 p.m.

What police want parents to know. Carrollton Township Police Chief Chris Kellett told ABC12 that children who wander off are the most common problem his officers see. “So every year, we’re usually looking for a Spider-Man or a Ninja Turtle or a Disney Princess because they wandered away out of eyesight of the parents,” he said. Kellett urged parents to walk with their children rather than letting them roam unsupervised, and to tuck a parent’s phone number inside a costume in case a child gets separated.

Saginaw Township Crime Prevention Officer Lyle Esterhai stressed being seen after dark. “I think some of the biggest risks are just being seen and being visible,” he said, recommending bright costumes, glow sticks and face paint instead of masks that block vision. He told drivers to expect the unexpected: slow down, avoid cellphones and watch for children stepping out between parked cars. Kellett asked visiting families to park in a proper spot and walk, rather than following children slowly by car, because his township draws trick-or-treaters from surrounding communities.

Both officers advised checking candy at home before children eat it and throwing out anything opened, damaged or unwrapped. Kellett said his department has not seen tampered candy locally but still recommends a check. Carrollton Township plans extra patrols on Friday, Oct. 30, known as Devil’s Night, and on Halloween itself, and officers will hand out candy and free Slurpees.
